It is officially October. For those of you who do not know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast Cancer is a disease that affects most people in one way or another. A large number of people have either fought breast cancer, know someone who is currently fighting breast cancer or have lost someone they know to breast cancer.

I am like most other people; my life has been touched by breast cancer. Seven years ago my grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was lucky; thanks to regular mammograms the cancer detected early and she was able to fight Breast Cancer and win. Breast Cancer research has always been something that my family has supported, but it became an issue closer to our hearts when a family friend was lost and someone in our family had to battle it.

On Sunday October 2nd thousands of individuals across the country, whose lives have been impacted by Breast Cancer, took to the street to walk or run in the annual CIBC Run for the Cure. Nearly 4000 Londoners participated in this year’s event, raising nearly $800,000, money that will stay in this region to help fight Breast Cancer.

It's believed over 170,000 in 55 communities across Canada participated in the Run for the Cure on Sunday.

On November 4th the London Convention Centre will proudly host Braz for the Cause - Fling 'EM for Breast Cancer

This is an annual event that directly supports breast cancer patients through the Massel-Cruickshank Breast Cancer Patient Assistance Fund by way of the London Regional Cancer Program Patient Assistance Program.

Assistance goes towards helping with:

  • Child care
  • anti-pain and nausea medication not covered by insurance
  • taxi fares
  • parking
  • wigs
  • prostheses and bras
  • palliative care

Over the next month, I invite you to share with us how Breast Cancer has affected your life, why Breast Cancer research is important to you, or who you ran or walked for.  Share your stories and/or images of sadness, triumph or inspiration here on our blog, through our Facebook Page or on Twitter.  Together we can help raise awareness, support others and make a difference.
